And the thing that matters most here: only the noticing and naming were verified. Everything the system added about what it was like — colour, intensity, impression — remained uncheckable and may well have been embroidery.

They were often unaware of the stimulus that had worked on them, and sometimes of the response itself. The conclusion they drew still reads uncomfortably: there may be no direct access to higher cognitive processes at all.
