It was not a perfect method of oversight; the transcript need not match what happens inside. But it was the only practical one, and a whole branch of safety research stood on it like a foundation.

The thought happens between tokens, in vectors for which nobody has a dictionary.

The side effect was described by the testers: it was not possible to measure what the model can actually do, because what you measure is not the model but the model plus its gate.

So when the choice comes between efficiency and legibility, efficiency wins — not from bad faith, but because there is nobody on the other side of the scale.

A model could write one thing and compute another; there is work showing that a written reasoning trace is sometimes a rationalisation rather than a report. So it is possible we are losing a window that showed decoration anyway — and that recurrent depth merely removes a curtain that was pretending to be a view. It is also possible that tools looking directly at activations will in time prove better than reading text, because they look where the thing actually happens.
